I’ve seen and heard of disgusting and sick people in my life but never have I heard of a person as sick as this one!

“In 2007, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, a so called artist, took an abandoned dog from the streets, tied him to a very short rope to a wall in an art gallery, and left a kettle of food on the other side of the room, beyond his reach, and left him there to slowly die of hunger and thirst.
The so-called artist of such cruelty and the visitors of the gallery of art watched the agony of this animal. The dog finally died of famine, surely after a painful, absurd and incomprehensible torture.
The prestigious Centralamerican Biennial of Art decided that this horrible act committed by this guy was art, and Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel actions in said Biennial in 2008.”

Juanita Bermúdez, director of the Códice Gallery, insisted Natividad escaped after just one day. She said: ‘It was untied all the time except for the three hours the exhibition lasted and it was fed regularly with dog food Habacuc himself brought in.’
I don’t know if this is true, but it’s a quote from the Guardian.

This is art. Vargas was trying to show that we only care about the suffering of lesser beings when it is made evident. People should not be too quick to judge his work. Verify the real facts before commenting about the “inhuman” way Vargas treated this animal. If you truly want to help mistreated and abused animals, please visit websites of animal rights orginizations such as PETA. Sorry to be blunt, but this is not animal cruelty.
Isabelle, you are completely ignorant. Your blind stupidity causes me extreme pain. This is WRONG not matter HOW you spin it. Wake up, you mindless twit.
Wow, Isabelle, you actually think this was a positive way to prove a point? Do we starve humans in art galleries simply because we want to make a statement!? What do you consider animal cruelty, I would love to here YOUR take on it.
This is not to be called art and this person is not an artist this is the sick action of someone trying to make a name for themselves The police need to take action and this person needs to be penalised for gross cruelty and neglect and not get the recognition that they are hoping for. Isabelle you need to really look at what you are sugesting.
omg!!! this is no fucken art dude that guillermo is crazy abd he needs to see a counsler to get some help!!! seriously what happened to the laws that protect animals. anilamls have feeling and have rights and should not be tortured in any kind of matter evryone who cotributed to this art form must have a cold heart to watch a poor dog die…
I think Isabelle made a good point.
If the artist’s intent is to prevent further cruelty on a much larger scale then, from a consequentialist and utilitarian POV, aren’t his actions potentially ‘good’? From that same POV, many people are here are obliged to explain how their deliberate failure to prevent more animal cruelty is exempt.
Personally, I think it’s cruel and quite horrid but that doesn’t prevent it from being ‘art’.
I probably justed wasted a few minutes writing this because all I expect to get back are knee-jerk reactions. Surprise me and think…
I love art !!
This art is NO art it’s a living creature with a big heart and his eyes say this is NO ART ! SAVE ME!!!! Isabel that siko could have done a painting to use his point on starvation and get his point across but to use a LIVE animal are you also insane what is this ??
THIS IS NOT ART!!

Can art not be considered a sort of representation? Suppose Guillermo had someone with a fatal disease present themselves in the corner of a gallery, slowly fading away before the eyes of the discriminating public…would that be art? Food for thought….
I do however, believe Guillermo has seriously crossed well beyond the line with this one…along with a few other installations at the show (deemed inappropriate by me) …ie the burning of 175 pieces of crack cocaine and an ounce of marijuana.
It angers me that no participants tried to prevent, stop or SAVE??!! the animal. I can only imagine how actually attending the opening would make me feel…physical sickness, mental stress, depression…shall I go on? Perhaps everyone was HIGH?!
As far as I can tell there were and maybe still are, protests to stop the Costa Rican “Ministry of Culture”? from letting Guillermo represent the country in upcoming international art events.
If you are still reading at this point (well done!) I must admit that we have no idea what the facts are behind this story. Get mad, get angry…but don’t forget to do some research!

“Supreme art is a traditional statement of certain heroic and religious truths, passed on from age to age, modified by individual genius, but never abandoned. The revolt of individualism came because the tradition had become degraded, or rather because a spurious copy had been accepted in its stead.” [William Butler Yeats]
